Myofascial Release (MFR)

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a therapeutic approach aimed at eliminating soft tissue restrictions in a horse’s body.

Fascia is a connective tissue that forms a web-like structure throughout the horse’s entire body. It acts as a sheath, providing support, protection, and maintaining the ideal positioning of tissues and bones. Fascia envelops each bone, muscle, nerve, organ, and vessel down to the cellular level, spanning from the horse’s head to its hooves.

The composition of fascia includes elastin, collagen, and a fluid ground substance. Trauma, poor posture, and repetitive training can lead to restrictions within the fascia. These restrictions have the potential to cause various issues, such as pain, swelling, misalignments, compromised muscular biomechanics, reduced range of motion, decreased strength, and even lameness.

Myofascial Release involves a hands-on, whole-body manual technique that specifically addresses the fascial system. By working through several layers or barriers within the fascia, this therapy aims to make the tissue soft and pliable. As a result, pressure is relieved from pain-sensitive areas, and natural motion is restored.

Myofascial release techniques are designed to release restrictions not only within muscles but also affecting bones, nerves, blood vessels, visceral organs, cranial and sacral structures, and even emotional blockages. This holistic approach to equine therapy can have far-reaching benefits in promoting the horse’s physical and emotional well-being.

Myofascial Release is not a substitute for proper veterinary medical care, but rather serves as a complement. Always contact your qualified veterinary practitioner for all diagnosis and/or treatment of serious injuries or ailments.
